Carl Nielsen International Competition.It is one of the most internationally influential classical music competitions in Europe and is named after Danish composer Carl Nielsen. The competition is hosted by Danish cultural institutions and related music organizations, and has long been committed to discovering and cultivating young performers with international potential.The competition is usually held in Denmark and is open to young musical talents from around the world. Participants come from Europe, North America, Asia and other countries and regions. The competition is known for its high professional standards, fair and rigorous judging mechanism. The judging panel is usually composed of world-class musicians, educators and orchestra chiefs.
The Carl Nielsen International Competition is held in different majors and sessions, covering vocal music and various instrumental music directions (specific majors are announced by session). In 2026, he will be rotated to the flute major, aiming to discover young flutists with international development potential, while promoting the diversified development of flute art in the contemporary music context. The competition repertoire emphasizes the comprehensive presentation of musical expression, technical ability and artistic understanding, while encouraging contestants to in-depth interpretation of Nordic music and classic works.
The competition is regarded as one of the important career springboards in Europe. The winners often receive international performance opportunities, career promotion support, and the attention of European music academies, orchestras and brokerage agencies. It has a high degree of recognition in the career development of young musicians.

Competition date: June 8 - June 16, 2026
Competition location: Odense, Denmark

Age limit: Open to players of all nationalities around the world, who must be under 30 years old on June 8, 2026 (that is, born on or after June 8, 1996).

The organizing committee will notify the pre-selection results between February and March 2026, and 24 players will eventually be selected to go to Odense to participate in the official competition.

Repertoire requirements: Comprehensive examination of artistic depth.The repertoire of this competition is sophisticated and will comprehensively examine the contestants' skills, musical expression and artistic understanding, with special emphasis on the interpretation of Nordic works and classic literature.Pre-selection round (video submission) The repertoire includes specific works by Telemann, Godard and Kager-Ehlert. The official competition is divided into four rounds, and the repertoire covers a wide range of fields from Baroque, classical to modern and commissioned new works (composed by Danish composer Louise Alenius for this competition). The finals require performances of Mozart's "Rondo in C Major" and Carl Nielsen's "Flute Concerto".
