The death has been announced of 26-year-old violinist Sanam Pourbabaei, a violin teacher from Siahkal, Iran. According to a report by Iran International, Pourbabaei was out on the street with friends in the city of Lahijan on 8 January, following the call for unified protests by exiled crown prince Reza Pahlavi. Security forces opened fire, and as the crowds attempted to flee, Pourbabaei was shot. Other reports indicate that the bullet struck her in the mouth and lodged in her throat and, following 16 hours in hospital, she died due to internal bleeding. Pourbabaei had allegedly been engaged to play in a concert that same evening.

Iran International’s report further notes that Pourbabaei’s family struggled to receive the body, having to return several times requesting its release. After making a payment of an undisclosed amount, the family finally received Pourbabaei’s remains but was required to bury her under heavy security late at night at the Bogh’e Barfjan cemetery in Siahkal. Pourbabaei has been described by multiple sources as a ‘beloved presence’ in the local music community.
