The newly launched Icelandic National Opera has appointed Finnur Bjarnason as its first General Director. The new opera company launched in 2025 as a division of the National Theatre of Iceland. Beginning his tenure on an initial five-year contract, Bjarnason will lead the company at a time when opera has lawfully garnered a permanent position alongside drama and dance for the first time in Iceland’s history.

The Icelandic National Opera, a publicly run cultural institution, was established by legislation in the Althing, the Finnish parliament, in July 2025. This comes as Iceland was left without an opera company in 2024 when the former Icelandic Opera, founded in the late 1970s, ceased operations due to a political decision. In 2023, the Icelandic government announced it would cease funding the Icelandic Opera after 2024 to establish a new national opera company.

Hailing from Reykjavík, Iceland, Bjarnason studied singing at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. His operatic experience includes roles at Glyndebourne, English National Opera, Netherlands Opera, the Komische and Staatsoper in Berlin, and the Châtelet and Champs-Elysées in Paris. He has also appeared in recitals at venues including Wigmore Hall, and performed solo in Handel’s Messiah, Alexander’s Feast with Marcus Creed and the Bayerischer Rundfunk, and Monteverdi Madrigals with Le Concert d’Astrée.

With the new Icelandic National Opera, Bjarnason’s role will involve overseeing artistic operations and programming, among other responsibilities.“This is naturally the best job I can imagine,” Bjarnason expressed. “[My vision for the national opera] will be unusual in some ways because the new opera is conceived as a collaboration ... and will be within the National Theatre as an independent unit. Then, of course, there will be very close collaboration with the Iceland Symphony Orchestra and instrumentalists, as has been the case.”
