Announced by Paris National Opera General Director Alexander Neef, conductor Semyon Bychkov has been appointed Music Director of the Paris National Opera. Bychkov will begin his tenure as Music Director on August 1st, 2028, and he will serve in the role for four seasons.Beginning on August 1st, 2026, Bychkov will accompany the ensembles associated with the Paris National Opera as Appointed Music Director. In this role, Bychkov will oversee the artistic quality of the orchestra, chorus, and vocal coaching department, and he will also contribute to planning the company's program and directing audition processes for principal roles.
As Music Director, Bychkov will continue these responsibilities, and he will also conduct two opera productions and six concert programs each season, both in Paris and on tour.
Bychkov has collaborated with the Paris National Opera since 2007, including during the company's first operatic tour to Japan in 2008. He is currently overseeing the company's production of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin, which will run from January 23 to February 15, 2026, at the Palais Garnier.
Semyon Bychkov has served as the Music Director of the Orchestre de Paris, Principal Guest Conductor of the St Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra, Principal Conductor of the WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne, and Chief Conductor of the Semperoper Dresden. Since 2018, he has been the Music Director and Chief Conductor of the Czech Philharmonic. He has been named Conductor of the Year by the International Opera Awards as well as by Musical America.
